This fantastic itinerary will take you from one of Switzerland’s most renowned destinations, St. Moritz, to Italy’s financial and economic capital, Milan, passing through the Valtellina region and crossing Lake Como. From the very first stage, St. Moritz-Tirano, you’ll enjoy unique panoramic views as you enter Italy. You will then cycle along the “Sentiero Valtellina” bike path, which runs through the valley to Colico, offering breathtaking views of Lake Como and the surrounding mountains.
Next, you’ll enjoy a relaxing boat trip across Lake Como, with a stop in Bellagio, the pearl of the lake, before reaching Lecco, a city famed for its connection to Alessandro Manzoni’s novel The Betrothed. From there, you’ll follow the Adda River towards Trezzo sull’Adda. After passing its castle, you’ll take the Martesana Canal bike path leading you to Milan. Along the way, you’ll see ancient locks, historic hydroelectric plants, elegant mansions of Milanese aristocracy, and traces of Leonardo da Vinci’s genius, thanks to the “Ecomuseum Adda di Leonardo” route. The scenery leading to Milan is characterized by magnificent villas, docks, rustic houses, and villages immersed in greenery with well-kept gardens.
ITINERARY Day 1: Arrival in Tirano
Enjoy your free time exploring the historic streets of Tirano, where even the most hidden corners hold fascinating memories of the past. The Madonna of Tirano shrine leads you along a tree-lined avenue to the historic center, featuring charming Liberty-style buildings. Tirano also delights food and wine lovers: the imposing terraced vineyards offer breathtaking views and delicious wines that reflect the flavors of the region. In the evening, meet your guide and fellow participants. Overnight in Tirano.
Day 2: St. Moritz (Bernina Red Train) (7-night version only)
Today is a day of wonder and excitement. A crossing of the Alps offers a unique experience: travel from Tirano to St. Moritz and back with the famous Bernina Red Train. Enjoy stunning views that take you to the high-altitude Bernina Hospice (2253 m); the route from Thusis to Tirano is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Overnight in Tirano.
Day 3: Tirano – Colico (76 km)
Start your journey with a gentle descent alongside the Adda River, cycling through the Valtellina region. Visit the charming village of Teglio, famous for its pizzoccheri (a local pasta made from buckwheat flour), and the small provincial capital of Sondrio.
End the day in Morbegno, whose historic buildings bear witness to a rich and fascinating past. Explore the streets to admire the elegant facades of ancient palaces with wrought-iron balconies and decorative friezes.
Don’t miss the Collegiate Church of St. John the Baptist, a splendid Baroque structure from the 17th-18th century, and the iconic Ganda Bridge with its striking architecture. Taste local specialties such as Bitto cheese, a key ingredient in pizzoccheri. Overnight in Colico.
Day 4: Excursions from Colico (13-34 km one way)
Stay in Colico, a tourist hub in northern Lake Como, to explore the area at your leisure. Cycle through the old town, visit the Montecchio and Fuentes forts, or head to the lakeshore for water sports and relaxation. Alternatively, take a ride to Lake Mezzola (13 km) or continue to Chiavenna (another 21 km), the main town of the valley. Return to Colico by train. Overnight in Colico.
Day 5: Colico – Bellagio – Lecco (by boat)
In the morning, board a boat to cross Lake Como, enjoying the stunning scenery along the way. Stop in Bellagio, the pearl of the lake, for a meal or a drink while exploring its enchanting streets.
In the late afternoon, take another boat to Lecco, a city steeped in literary history as the setting of The Betrothed. Lecco is surrounded by iconic mountains like the Grigne and Resegone. Visit the remnants of 14th-century walls, the historic squares, and St. Nicholas Basilica with its towering bell tower overlooking the old harbor. Overnight in Lecco.
Day 6: Lecco – Trezzo sull’Adda (36 km)
Today’s route takes you along a partly unpaved, gently descending path following the Adda River as it leaves the lake. This idyllic landscape features historic hydroelectric plants, monasteries, local eateries, famous locks, and scenic spots associated with Leonardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” and ferry designs. Between Vaprio and Trezzo, visit the UNESCO-listed Crespi d’Adda, a 19th-century workers’ village. Overnight in Trezzo.
Day 7: Trezzo sull’Adda – Milan (40 km)
On the final stage, cycle along the Martesana Canal bike path, completed in 1496 under Ludovico Sforza’s guidance. Admire elegant villas, historic mills, small churches, and old laundries along the way. Gradually, the countryside transitions to urban landscapes as you enter Milan from the northeast.
